Serengeti Wildebeest Migration is a year-round natural phenomenon where up to three million animals migrate in the Serengeti national park, mainly wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and elands. This is the largest overland mammal migration in the world. They migrate over 800 km (500 miles) in search of green pastures and water. Due to the huge size of the herd, the animals have to move to be able to survive. The herds generally follow the rain, as where there is rain there is fresh grass. Once the grass is depleted in one area, they move on to a grassy area.
Witnessing the Great Migration is considered to be the most amazing wildlife spectacle on earth. Wild Tanzania Safaris normally follows the Great Migration and knows exactly where the herds are.
